Development Team

Developed by specialist husbandry equipment engineer Brian Eadie, with the engineering expertise of Brian Falconer, having been conceived by Professor Vince Molony, expert in animal pain.

Professor Vince Molony has taught and researched animal pain for several decades ! He is internationally renowned and has, through his work, developed alternative and always novel products and methods in an effort to reduce pain. He championed the needless injector for safer anaesthetic application, extra tight rubber rings and the use of standard rubber rings with a burdizzo clamped across the whole scrotum, and known as the combination method. However the ClipFitter concept is what he calls the culmination of his 35 years; he believes, and now proven with science, that it provides the best possible and most practical system of pain relief for lambs. Designed primarily of older lambs, and for the sake of hill farmers who through necessity break the rules. Most national and international husbandry standards reference Molony’s work He worked often with Joyce Kent who has also published many papers in her own right.

ClipFitter, once known as ClampEasy, is completely his concept and he has patents granted now across the world. Professor Molony’s Clip crushes across the whole scrotum or tail and is left on the animal to complete the removal of the required ‘appendage’.

The first official trial of these new Molony Clamps was conducted by the Scottish Rural University (formerly SAC) in Edinburgh, under UK Home Office rules, with excellent results for the older tested lambs. The 2022 SRUC Trial results are soon to be revealed but show excellent results for young (<7 days) lambs too and a vast improvement over best practice for older lambs.

Brian Eadie is a graduate engineer and creator of around 20 patented products covering several industries. He has managing the product development and commercialisation of ClipFitter since it started in 2018. His Company, Eadie Bros & Co Ltd, supplies Clips and Fitters, exploiting his extensive contacts in that manufacturing and farming industry around the world. He has completed three business sales to global market leaders, since 1990, and all associated with products which make difficult jobs easier and more practical for farmers; therefore in many ways similar to this current project. He has a patents granted for the latest ClipFitter applicator and clips, and owns the licence for Prof Molony’s original concept patent.

Brian Falconer is a passionate, practical and theoretical graduate engineer. Co-opted by Brian Eadie to design the new application system, he describes himself as a tinkerer and problem solver, adept at both analysing and solving problems (mathematically or otherwise) and then putting a solution into practice (with extensive hands on engineering skills).

His ability to covert the basic design of a clamping mechanism that can be manufactured without major capital investment, has been key to our ability to supply the market. Needing a considerable degree of skill, the method nevertheless has served us well in the years since Brian developed it.

Peter Eadie is skilled mechanical engineer and materials enthusiast. He has been involved in many areas of manufacture, but importantly he has underpinned many of our key developments over 30 years. He still makes our BitFitter (beak-bit dispenser & applicator), but his materials expertise is in plastics and metals. For our ClipFitter project, has scoured the industry for bio-plastic options, resulting in our current ‘wood and plant’ choice. Peter is patient and thorough and will continue to look for alternative options in the future – a difficult challenge because of the need for rigidity, without brittleness, and biodegradability at the correct rate and under natural conditions.
